The tradition of Las Marias Mezcal started 76 years ago with Don Bernardo Diaz de León, who produced mezcal illegally in downtown San Luis Potosi in the basement of his house. Don Bernardo's daughter, Maria, started working with him when she was just 12 years old. Maria's daughter Emma del Carmen Moreno Grageda and her husband Juan Zarur Flores are the
founders of Las Marias and Juan is also the maestro mezcalero. The Las Marias brand was established in honor of Emma's mother and Juan's own mother, who is also named Maria.
